Bruins Turn in Lifeless Effort in Loss to Jets

Published December 23, 2023 at 7:52
The Boston Bruins limped out of Winnipeg after getting stomped on by the Jets 5-1. This was the Bruins 3rd loss in a row and 4th our of 5 games. They are benefitting from such a hot start to the season that they are still six points ahead of the Maple Leafs for first place in the Atlantic Division, but that will quickly disappear if they don't turn their play around. Friday night, they were completely outplayed by a very game Winnipeg Jets team who have been one of the surprises in the NHL this season. They were outshot for the 12th time in 14 games which shows how much their goaltending has been a factor in their success this season. On a night where Jermey Swayman wasn't at his best, the team was not able to help him out either defensively or offensively, tallying only one goal on the night.

Charlie McAvoy clearly showed some rust coming back from injury, finishing with a -2 rating on the night. Jake Debrusk continued to look lost, registering just one shot on goal on the night and held pointless for a 5th game and a 9th straight game without a goal. Their Special Teams were also off for the night, going 0-3 on the powerplay while allowing two goals while shorthanded.

The Bruins did find some momentum in the third, but it was too little too late as coming back from 4-0 in the third against goalie Connor Hellebuyck is a tall task. Jim Montgomery's decision to shuffle the lines tonight from the usually line up will be called into question, as the offense hasn't exactly been on a dry spell, other then an off night against one of the hottest teams in the league in the New York Rangers. While its time to hit the panic button as the Bruins are still comfortably atop the Atlantic standings, they desperately need to turn their play around to avoid getting overtaken by the competition behind them.
