In the 2022-23 NHL season, Jim Montgomery led the Boston Bruins to a remarkable run. Yet, not long ago, the accomplished coach faced some personal demons.
Before joining the Bruins, Montgomery was the head coach of the Dallas Stars from 2018 to 2020. He was dismissed from his position due to a "personal behaviour issue" that was later identified as alcohol addiction.
In December, Montgomery appeared as a guest on the Got Yer Back Podcast hosted by TSN's Pierre LeBrun and Ryan Rishaug. He talked about the significance of recognizing when to seek help for addiction. Give it a listen here:
After being let go by the Stars in 2020, Montgomery voluntarily entered rehab for alcohol abuse. Stars GM Jim Nill confirmed that the organization had been worried about his addiction and had confronted him about it on multiple occasions.
This shift in mindset is evident in the Bruins' performance this season, as Montgomery's positive coaching style has drawn out the very best in his team. His arrival in Boston has been a refreshing change for the Bruins, especially after the rumours surrounding the tough coaching style of previous coach Bruce Cassidy.
