Patrice Bergeron, the revered Boston Bruins icon, continues to demonstrate his ability to make accurate predictions, even when it comes to matters off the ice.
During the end-of-season interviews with the Golden Knights, George McPhee, President of Hockey Operations for Vegas, revealed that Bergeron was one of the first to forecast their triumphant Stanley Cup victory in the 2022-23 season.
Bergeron's prescient words were uttered last summer when the Golden Knights were in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Peter DeBoer. McPhee and General Manager Kelly McCrimmon deliberated over the prospect of bringing in Bruce Cassidy, who had recently coached Bergeron for six seasons in Boston.
In a fascinating turn of events, the Golden Knights' captain, Mark Stone, reached out to Bergeron to discuss the possibility. McPhee shared the outcome of their conversation, recounting Bergeron's words with enthusiasm, "'Holy smokes, Vegas is going to hire Bruce Cassidy, and they're going to win the Stanley Cup next year.'"
As history unfolded, the Vegas Golden Knights proved Bergeron's prophecy to be true, lifting the coveted Stanley Cup in 2023.
